Ryuhei Kitamura and Shunji Iwai gear up for BatonA new trailer is out for Baton, the sci-fi anime directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and produced by Shunji Iwai.

The film is set to run exclusively during the 150th anniversary celebration of the city of Yokohama from April 28 to September 27. Baton will feature a mixture of rotoscoping and animation.

Baton will tell the story of a future Earth, in which the two main characters, Apollo and Michal, will live side by side with intelligent robots.

The actual animation was supervised by Mark Brooks and produced at Studio Titmouse in the United States.

Ryuhei Kitamura is well-known for his sci-fi cult films Azumi (2003) and Versus (2000), among others. Shunji Iwai, once cited as an influence by Quentin Tarantino for his film All About Lily Chou Chou (2001), is one of Japan’s premier romance genre directors, with his hit film Love Letter (1995) breaking box-office records for domestic productions.
