Alejandro Amenábars Roman epic Agora tops Spanish box officeEnglish-language historical epic Agora directed by Oscar-winning auteur Alejandro Amenábar of The Sea Inside (2004) and The Others (2001) fame has topped the Spanish box office upon its release, becoming the year’s most successful domestically produced film with earnings of $10.3 million in four days.

Amenábar’s most expensive film to date, Agora premiered October 9, taking in $7.9 million over three days to become Spain’s second highest weekend draw ever. Starring Rachel Weisz and Max Minghella, the film deals with the story of astronomer-philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria:

A historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning a slave who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy professor and atheist Hypatia of Alexandria.

The film is expected to get a nationwide US release on December 18 – so be sure to check out the trailer and poster below! Focus Features has acquired the international rights.
